SABMiller in conjunction with Solutions Technology awarded the REDDS Formulation Plant project to CSS. The scope of the project was to develop the PLC and SCADA application software for this new plant. One of the requirements was that the software/SCADA should look and feel like the recently upgraded Brewhouse system and also be "Batch Ready", by this we mean when in future a batch engine is introduced that the removal of some code would easily integrate with a batch engine.
The PLC used was Modicon Quantum with Concept as the programming software. The Operator interface into the system was Wonderware Archestra.
Challenges faced were among the following:
- Develop software that emulates a batch engine that would act in the same way as the current batch system in used RS Batch.
Thanks to careful planning and team cooperation the entire REDDS Plant was first simulated and tested before commissioning took place, which led to target dates being met well in advance.
The popular REDDS cider, is now proudly manufactured at the Prospecton Brewery and distributed throughout Kwa-Zulu Natal.
