Client : Holcim Aggregates
Duration : 4 Months
Budget : R250,000
This project scope included the design, engineering, supply and commissioning of a new expandable control system, to replace the existing Telemecanique rack mount PLC system, for the control of the Verulam based quarry. Holcim wanted to standardize on a single control system across all the quarry plant and thus the TSX Momentum PLC and JSENT SCADA was used.
Standard software blocks as developed during the Coedmore project was rolled out to further the objective to standardize as all the plant will have the same look and feel to it.
The first part was commissioned during the December shutdown, and this included the complete control based on their existing control philosophy.
The second phase of the project included Holcim replacing one of the mechanical crushers. During the same time a new control philosophy was implemented by feeding the plant via a closed loop system thus maximizing the total throughput without overloading the equipment. This resulted in a definite increase in productivity. Production totals increased in the excess of 20%.
